Your site is great! I especially like all the e-text available. Well anyways, I found this poem in the Second Anthology of Atheism and Rationalism and since I didn't want to type it up, I tried to search for it on the net. Only thing I found was an incomplete version of it. I do not think it's in your archive either so I typed it up and here it is. (Hopefully I'm not violating some copyright but it is by Anonymous!)
The Dying Atheist Now closed around the deepening shades of death Such is the lot of everying that lives, 'Tis folly to ignore the many links But as from germs doth spring all life around, Like frailest form of life that crawls the earth, So must I die, and so be laid at rest, But yet I'm troubled by no Christian fears, No blood-polluted god awaits my soul, Away, false fears, ye spectres of the mind, And as I gaze upon the sea of life, The good I've wrought, perchance, may not bring forth, And you my faithful friends I leave behind, Thus will I pass away, content in peace, Now I must slumber, I am old and gray, Strange darkness falls across my feeble eyes, Behold he sleeps,--raise up his hoary head, |
